THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF OUR BUILDINGS
The Cottage and Chapel date back to 1611 and were built by the owner of the farm at the time. The Chapel is beautifully constructed from stone and flint and is located within the garden. It was last used as a Chapel around 1847. The Cottage was then reinstated and rendered, giving it the appearance of a newer building.
During the Second World War, after the Battle of Britain, when plans commenced for the invasion of France, the Cottage and Chapel became part of Operation Hadrian and formed one of the eighty two advanced landing grounds in the South of England with a number of British and Norwegian squadrons based here. The Cottage was used as the Paymaster’s and Flight Control offices. During the time of the Norwegians, Crown Prince Olav visited and stayed in the Cottage. Clarke Gable was another famous visitor -
